who we are
Degrees (“Degrees,” “we,” “us”) is a social app operated by Degrees App Inc. that assigns you and your friends a bar on Friday nights. This policy explains what information the Degrees iOS app and this website collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions: matthew@trydegrees.com.
information we collect
Phone number. You sign in with your phone number, verified by a one-time SMS code. We use it to create and secure your account and to match you with friends who have your number.
Profile. The name, username, and profile photo you choose. These are visible to other Degrees users.
Contacts (optional). If you grant contacts access, the phone numbers in your address book are sent securely to our server to find friends already on Degrees. We store those numbers only as one-way cryptographic hashes — the raw numbers are not retained, and your contacts are never displayed to anyone or used for marketing.
Location (optional). With your permission, we use your precise location to place you at your assigned bar, power waves, and build your “Bar DNA” (a private history of bars you’ve visited). If you grant background access, arrivals can be logged while the app is closed. Your friends can see which bar you’re assigned to or checked in at on Friday nights — never your live GPS position.
Activity. Friendships, invites, waves, and bar assignments — the core of how the app works.
Push token. If you enable notifications, we store your device’s push token to deliver the Friday reveal and waves.
the waitlist
If you join the waitlist — on this site or inside the app — we collect your name, email address, and phone number, along with who invited you and whether you agreed to receive texts. SMS consent is optional and is not a condition of joining.
To decide when it’s your turn, we convert your phone number into a one-way cryptographic hash (an HMAC) and match that hash against the hashed address books that existing members have chosen to sync. That’s how we measure how many people you already know on Degrees — without exposing your number or anyone’s contacts. To be removed from the waitlist, email matthew@trydegrees.com.
what we don't do
We don’t sell your data. We don’t show ads. We don’t use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
service providers
We use a small set of infrastructure providers to run Degrees: Supabase (database and authentication), Twilio (SMS verification codes), Railway (application hosting), and Apple (push notifications). They process data only on our behalf.
what other users see
Your name, username, and photo are visible to other users (for example in friend search, your friends’ network graphs, and “who you know” suggestions). On Friday nights, friends and friends-of-friends can see which bar you were assigned to or are at. Blocking a user removes you from each other’s view.
deleting your account
You can delete your account any time in the app: Profile → Delete account. This permanently removes your profile, friendships, waves, invites, photo, contact hashes, and phone number from our systems. You can also email us to request deletion.
age
Degrees is for adults. You must be at least 17 to use the app, and of legal age for the venues it suggests.
changes
If we make material changes to this policy we’ll update this page and note the date above. Continued use of Degrees after a change means you accept the updated policy.
